For some organizations, partnerships are more than professional collaborations. They can represent a connection between where a journey began and where it is today.
For Genius Hub Global Initiative (GHGI), our recent engagement with Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI) Nigeria carries that significance.
GPI has been part of the personal and professional journey of Isimeme Whyte, GMD/Founder of Genius Hub and Genius Hub Global Initiative. “For her, a former GPI participant, the opportunity to return to that space years later as a stakeholder working to advance safer and more empowered communities represents a meaningful full-circle moment”.
GHGI recently participated in the project commencement meeting for “Engendering Community Resilience to Human Trafficking in Edo State,” hosted by GPI Nigeria with support from the Resilience Fund through The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.
Supporting Survivors Beyond Rescue
The project will support 30 female survivors of trafficking through survivor-centred counselling, case management, referrals, and individual reintegration planning.
While rescue is an important step in responding to human trafficking, sustainable recovery requires continued support. Survivors may need assistance rebuilding their confidence, relationships, livelihoods, and economic independence while navigating the effects of their experiences.
Reintegration, therefore, is not simply about returning someone to a community. It is about supporting them to rebuild their lives with dignity, safety, opportunity, and agency.
Building Resilience Through Opportunity
Human trafficking is closely connected to vulnerability, limited economic opportunities, inadequate support systems, and other factors that can increase people’s exposure to exploitation.
Addressing these challenges requires collective action from communities, families, government institutions, civil society organizations, development partners, educational institutions, and the private sector.
This is where GHGI’s work connects strongly with the objectives of the project.
Through our focus on skills development, economic empowerment, community engagement, and support for vulnerable populations, we believe empowerment must be practical. Access to skills, livelihoods, entrepreneurship opportunities, and employability support can help individuals rebuild confidence and strengthen their ability to make independent choices.
For survivors, these opportunities can form an important part of a broader reintegration journey.
Keeping Survivors at the Centre
A meaningful response to human trafficking must place survivors at the centre.
Their dignity, privacy, voices, choices, and recovery matter. Support should recognize survivors not only through the experiences they have endured, but also through their abilities, aspirations, and potential to rebuild their futures.
Achieving this requires collaboration. Different organizations bring different forms of expertise from counselling and case management to legal support, migration assistance, skills development, and community engagement.
No single organization can address the complexities of human trafficking alone.
From Being Empowered to Empowering Others
The full-circle nature of this engagement is particularly significant for Isimeme Whyte, whose journey was influenced by her experience with GPI.
It is a reminder of how development work can create a lasting ripple effect: people are supported, they grow, they gain knowledge and experience, and eventually they are able to contribute to creating opportunities for others.
That principle reflects the broader vision of Genius Hub Global Initiative.
